ISSUES

Health and Wellbeing

For over 15 years, Michelle has been an advocate for the health and well-being of women and children. She has been passionate about increasing access to healthcare and giving all babies a healthy start in life. Michelle has successfully:

Worked with the State Health Division to add Cystic Fibrosis testing to the Newborn Screening Panel.
Successfully advocated at the legislature for an increase in tobacco cessation programs and funding.
Partnered with hospitals to implement policies to eliminate elective deliveries prior to 39 weeks gestation to reduce preterm birth.
Advocated for the addition of Critical Congenital Heart Defect Screening to the Newborn Screening Panel through.

Michelle was an instrumental part of bringing stakeholders together and reducing preterm birth in Nevada by over 30%, thus saving the state over $80 million in hospital costs.

Michelle will fight for an increased emphasis on preventative healthcare, as well as a focused effort to recruit and keep quality medical professionals in Southern Nevada. Because healthcare should be treated as a right, and not as a privilege or a product.

Investing in Education

As a mother of two children, Michelle has been active in her children’s school and passionate about education. Michelle has been a member of her children’s school SOT for two years and involved with their budget process. Michelle knows first hand that If our kids are going to compete for the jobs of the future, they need a world-class education – from preschool all the way through college. That’s why Michelle will fight to invest more in our public schools so we can raise teacher pay, reduce classroom sizes, and give our kids the one-on-one attention they deserve.

Economic Opportunities for All

Michelle believes that hard work should be rewarded and that no one who works more than 40 hours a week should live in poverty – but to do that, we need to create a Nevada that works for everyone! That’s why Michelle will fight for equal pay for equal work, increasing the minimum wage, and champion policies to support paid family leave for working families.

Jobs of the Future

Michelle believes that to build a strong Nevada we must diversify our economy and provide opportunities for small businesses to grow or get started. By investing in clean and renewable energy sources we can create the jobs of the future and move away from a boom-and-bust economy. Michelle will work to keep our clean energy economy on track by prioritizing legislation to encourage more companies and jobs to move to Southern Nevada.
